By Labengki Island Editorial Desk

Labengki Island is a small karst group in North Konawe, Southeast Sulawesi, reached only by boat from the Kendari side. Published accounts point to lagoons, giant clams and a Bajo fishing village, usually on a multi-day trip that also crosses to the Sombori Islands. Traveller and operator accounts describe basic rooms, and tide and sea can change plans.

What is Labengki Island?

Kompas describes Labengki as an island group in Lasolo Kepulauan district, North Konawe, and reports the nickname "miniature Raja Ampat", earned by small islands and rock formations rising from blue sea. Two names matter most. The travel account Voyage in Style calls Labengki Kecil the small island with the fishing village and Labengki Besar the large, mountainous one with steep cliffs. The World Travel Guy, a traveller's blog, adds the detail that shapes a visit: most residents live on Kecil while the main sights are on Besar, so a stay usually involves boat hops between them.

People live here, and tourism is recent. The Ministry of Tourism Jadesta portal says Labengki opened to tourism in 2016 and lists 523 residents for 2021, mostly fishers. ANTARA gives about 100 families, all of them Bajo, and notes a top-50 finish for the village in the 2024 Anugerah Desa Wisata Indonesia programme. Our page on the Labengki Kecil village covers life on the inhabited island.

Read the nickname as a remark about scenery. Operator Asik Travel, which sells trips here, says the karst compares with Raja Ampat but the diving does not.

Where is Labengki and how does it relate to Sombori?

Labengki sits off the mainland north of Kendari, in Indonesia's Southeast Sulawesi province. Jadesta pins the tourism village at -3.482082, 122.483513, a point that marks the village and not the whole group. The page where is Labengki Island sorts out the district names and the map.

Sombori is the neighbour, and it belongs to another province. Asik Travel says it lies about 20 km north of Labengki, across the border in Morowali, Central Sulawesi. Explore describes visits as three or four-day tours with homestay nights. Asik Travel's working distinction helps with planning: Labengki is the stay-and-snorkel base, and Sombori has the sharper karst, caves and viewpoint climbs. See Labengki vs Sombori and our overview of the Sombori Islands.

WWF Indonesia says a marine park designated in 1999 covers Pulau Labengki, and the Forestry Ministry's KSDAE office calls Labengki a buffer village by that park. Our page on the Teluk Lasolo Nature Park gives the area figures and the wording each agency uses.

How do people usually reach it from Kendari?

By hired boat, since operator Asik Travel describes every crossing as a chartered or tour boat. Published crossing times vary a great deal, partly because the accounts describe different harbours and boats:

How do people usually reach it from Kendari?
SourceStarting pointTime on the water
Asik Travel (operator)Tanasa in Soropia, about 40 minutes by road from KendariAbout 2.5 hours by wooden boat
Jadesta (official portal)Kendari dockAbout 2 hours
Kompas (press)Kendari portAbout 5 hours

Ask your boat provider for the time on your actual vessel and route, then read Kendari to Labengki for the fuller list of routes. Asik Travel advises landing in Kendari the day before your boat. Our Kendari stopover page covers that night.

What do visitors come to see on the water?

Jadesta names ten visitor spots: Tobelo cave, the lagoon, Blue Lagoon, the Raja Ampat view, Teluk Cinta, Pasir Panjang beach, Pasir Merah beach, Kampung Bajo, the lighthouse and the swimming pool cave. Other sources add detail and sometimes disagree:

What do visitors come to see on the water?
StopWhat is reportedReported by
Blue LagoonGreen water surrounded by rockANTARA
Twin LagoonTwo lagoons separated by rockANTARA
Pasir PanjangLong white-sand beach where visitors snorkel and pitch tentsANTARA
Pasir MerahNamed for reddish-orange sand. Asik Travel lists a Red Sand Beach on the Sombori side, so its location is disputedThe World Travel Guy
Giant clams (kimaboe)Can be seen while snorkelling or divingJadesta

The clams are the local distinction. Naturevolution, a conservation group, reports that over ten years about 8,000 clams of eight species were gathered and moved onto reefs that local fishers accepted as no-take zones. That figure shows the scale of the work and is not a count of what lives there today, and nobody can promise you a sighting. RRI also mentions hidden beaches reachable only at low tide, so the tide changes which stops a boat can offer on a given day. Go deeper with the Labengki lagoons, Labengki giant clams and Labengki snorkeling.

What can you do on Labengki Island besides swim?

Walk, climb, paddle and, on one account, fish. Operator Sulawesi Eco Adventure ends its five-day route at a viewpoint. Love Bay has a viewpoint climb of its own, covered on our Love Bay page. The travel feature Travelmarbles said in 2018 that Nirwana Eco-Resort supplied kayaks along with snorkel and scuba equipment, so ask the property whether that still holds and whether non-guests can use them.

Fishing is the awkward entry. The Indonesia Tourism site promotes it, naming red snapper, yellowfin tuna and barracuda and suggesting you grill the catch. Naturevolution, by contrast, describes reefs that local fishers accepted as no-take zones, and WWF Indonesia says a marine park covers Pulau Labengki. Those accounts do not fit together, so ask the provincial conservation office whether fishing is allowed, and keep any line off the clam reefs.

Where do visitors sleep, and how simple is it?

RRI reports accommodation running from resident homestays to an exclusive resort. In 2023 Bank Indonesia named Labengki Kecil the province's first QRIS tourism village, according to ANTARA, though it would be unwise to assume every host still takes QR payments. Where to stay on Labengki compares bathrooms, power and meals as sources describe them.

The price table on this page collects published third-party figures for trips, each with its source and the month it was checked. None of them is an offer from this site. Haraduta and Tournesia both state that their open-trip rates apply only to Indonesian citizens, so foreign travellers should ask those sellers for a separate quote. Asik Travel says its per-person rates fall with group size because the boat, fuel and guide cost the same for one traveller or six. Read each row as published and open its source before you rely on it.

When is the weather most workable?

Published answers conflict. Weather Spark's modelled data for Kendari gives May as the wettest month and September as the driest, but that describes the city and says little about the sea. Sellers conflict as well: Asik Travel favours April to October, TripTrik October to mid June and Sulawesi Eco Adventure February to May plus September and October. The best time to visit Labengki sets each claim side by side. If you want the festival, the 2026 edition fell at the end of May, according to ANTARA, and the date is not fixed.

How many people actually visit Labengki?

One set of monthly counts exists, from pandemic years. A 2023 article in the journal SALAM reports these figures from a North Konawe tourism official, interviewed in August 2022:

How many people actually visit Labengki?
Month2021, domestic visitors2022, guests (pax)
January108117
February125132
March10954
April2880
May84293
June67120
July16105
August23Not given
September54Not given
October252Not given
November204Not given
December149Not given

By our addition that is 1,219 for 2021 and 901 for January to July 2022. Three limits apply. These are pandemic years, and the article reports no foreign arrivals, though Jadesta says visitors from Germany, India, France and China have come since 2016. The 2022 column is labelled guest occupancy, so it may not count the same thing as the 2021 column. And this guide has no newer monthly series. These counts are too old to show how busy a stop is now or how many boats and rooms are free, so ask.

Who is this trip right for, and who should skip it?

It tends to suit travellers who:

  • Want limestone scenery and lagoons more than resort life.
  • Have at least three days. Asik Travel says a two-day version is normally too much movement for too little island time.
  • Can manage with little shared language, a limit The World Travel Guy reports in the Labengki and Sombori villages.

Think twice if you:

  • Are planning a dive holiday. Operator guide labengkisombori.com says this is not a dedicated dive destination.
  • Expect pristine reefs everywhere. The World Travel Guy says the area is not really known for good snorkelling, partly because of dynamite fishing, while the conservation site yannbigant.com describes relatively healthy reefs around Nirwana resort.
  • Need a same-day onward flight. Asik Travel warns that the return boat depends on the sea.
  • Struggle with getting on and off boats. Labengkisombori.com says most landings are wet, with no piers at stops.

What does this site do, and what does it not do?

Labengki Island is a specialist travel guide under Juara Holding Group, with a request desk. It is not a resort, tour operator, boat owner or government body, and claims from sellers, travellers and agencies are credited to whoever made them. A request through the desk can end in a paid booking, which gives us a commercial interest. Any fee, price and the company that contracts with you are stated in writing in an offer before you agree, and nothing is reserved until then. The disclaimer and how this guide is written give the detail.

What do people ask first about Labengki Island?

What is Labengki famous for?

Mainly its lagoons and limestone islets, the miniature Raja Ampat nickname reported by Kompas, and giant clams known as kimaboe, which the Jadesta portal says can be seen while snorkelling or diving. Conditions decide which stops a boat can reach on a given day.

Is Labengki worth the trip?

It depends on what you will trade for it. The scenery and lagoons draw people, but the crossing alone takes hours, rooms are often basic, and the reef reports are mixed. Allow at least three days, or choose somewhere easier.

Can you visit Labengki on a day trip from Kendari?

Asik Travel, an operator, says a day trip does not work because of the crossing each way. Its trips run for several days, and it advises landing in Kendari the day before departure.

Why visit Labengki Island rather than Raja Ampat?

Go for the karst scenery, lagoons and village stays. Asik Travel, which sells trips here, gives Raja Ampat the edge on reefs and dive infrastructure, so do not choose Labengki for the diving.

Does this site run boats or rooms at Labengki?

No. This is a guide with a request desk, and it owns no boats, rooms or tours. Third parties provide those services, and a written offer is the only document that sets a price or commits anyone.
